One thing you’ll notice when examining the Photon’s spectrogram is that it emits a broad band of light, giving it a smoother, more natural distribution. This stands in contrast to LED red light therapy panels engineered to emit light at particular wavelengths. Here, the curve shows peaks at several points:
- Red Wavelengths: The Photon emits substantial energy in the red spectrum, peaking around 660nm, a sweet spot for red light therapy.
- Near-Infrared Peaks: Prominent readings are at 810 and 850nm, standard therapeutic wavelengths, with the highest peak reaching 915nm.
This device also emits small amounts of blue, green, and amber light and visible red, giving it a warm red hue. Based on these observations, we’re getting a blend of light close to the spectrum of natural sunlight, minus harmful UV and blue wavelengths.
Remember my spectometer measues light up to 1050nm. Thus there will be a lot of light I can't measure.
Crunching the Numbers: Comparing Output Across Ranges
I recorded all wavelength readings and loaded them into Excel to give you a clearer picture. Here’s where it gets interesting: I compared the Photon’s light output with readings from both natural sunlight (New Zealand) and a high-end red light therapy panel like the Block Blue Light Mega.
Red Light Output (620–680nm)
The Photon’s intensity is 2mW/cm² for the classic red light wavelengths. To put this into perspective:
- Winter Sunlight (midday in New Zealand): 8 mW/cm²
- Summer Sunlight: 11 mW/cm²
- Block Blue Light Mega Panel: 30 mW/cm²
With a 2mW/cm² reading, the Photon’s red light output is well below natural sunlight, even in winter. It’s significantly lower than the output of dedicated red light panels designed to deliver high therapeutic doses.
Near-Infrared Range (800–870nm)
For near-infrared light, I used the range from 800 to 870nm, where the Photon’s output measured 6mW/cm²:

The Photon holds up better when measured over a broader spectrum but doesn’t reach the intensity levels of sunlight or high-powered red light therapy panels in the near-infrared range.
