The anticipation builds as I prepare to review the Rojo Refine 3600; many have wondered if this is the ultimate panel for red light therapy. Keep reading because we will soon have the answer.
As I approach it, I’m struck by the sheer size. To give you an idea of its magnitude, I compared it to its smaller counterpart, the Rojo Refine 900, a 300 LED panel. This giant big brother, the 3600, boasts an impressive 1200 LEDs.
The Rojo Refine 900 has already delivered remarkable results for many, but this beast is a comprehensive all-in-one solution. There is no need for multiple panels and complicated setups, just one massive body panel.
It’s the second generation of the Refine series panel from an Australian and New Zealand company, featuring many updates for both the panel and the company. Rojo named it “Refine” because they’ve upgraded their red light therapy panel, which helps you refine and improve your health (code ALEX saves if you buy!). This panel has so many features and new technology that it may be the most revolutionary series of panels I have seen.
Features
Rojo has programmed the panel to follow what they believe is the best approach for specific goals. They call these protocols their smart modes. There are various sleep modes, a sport recovery mode, and a bone health mode. The emitted wavelengths, intensity, and time duration change when you select a mode. You can access these settings directly through the panel or the app.
In addition, the panel allows you to create and save custom preset modes that control the amount of energy emitted at each wavelength. This panel has some really cool features.
The panel also includes pulsing in the near-infrared wavelengths from 1Hz to 999Hz. It has a touchscreen control system, an app, dual-chip LEDs, and a wall-mounted bracket.
Dimensions
The dimensions are 70 inches tall by 23 inches wide. It weighs 41 kilos, which is about 90 pounds. It runs off one cable and one power point, with no issues with circuitry. The Rojo Refine panel comes in different sizes, from the smallest panel with 60 LEDs to the largest panel, the 3600, with 1200 dual-chip LEDs.
Wavelengths
The Refine (remember code ALEX saves) series panels emit five different wavelengths. The energy distribution is as follows: 25% is assigned to 630nm, another 25% to 660nm, and 17% each to 810nm, 830nm, and 850nm.
Let’s fire up the spectrometer and test this accuracy.
I captured a snapshot showing five distinct peaks corresponding to five different wavelengths. Now, let’s examine whether these peaks align with the stated specs.
Power Output
Let’s refer to the shopping tool on my website. The Refine 3600 produces a radiance figure of 72mw/cm2 at a distance of 6 inches. My spectrometer reading is in close agreement with the advertised value of 75. My peak reading was 80 mW/cm2, and the total power was 670 Watts. In addition, Rojo reports a solar meter value of 193 mW, but the spectrometer reading is considerably more accurate.
Looking at all the panels in my database, sorted by high radiance, the Rojo 3600 is in 18th place. This may not sound amazing, but look how close these numbers are. It has a respectable amount of power. If you rank it by total power, it’s second to the Rouge Ultimate G3, which I will discuss soon and do a head-to-head comparison.
EMF And Sound
I conducted tests on the EMF levels, which were within acceptable limits. The sound level measured at 43.5 decibels, which is unexpectedly low considering the panel size.
Price and Shipping
The Rojo Refine 3600 retails for $3700 in US dollars. However, using code ALEX will get you a 10% discount, costing $3300 USD.
Rojo HQ is based in Australia and New Zealand, but it has warehouses globally, including in America, the UK, France, and Australia. This allows international shipping. Wherever you live, there’s a high probability of a nearby warehouse offering free shipping to your location.
Shipping should be relatively quick. If you have a warranty issue, having a local warehouse should lessen the hassle of return shipping. The Rojo Refine 3600 has a 3-year warranty and a 60-day return policy.
Stands
The panel arrives with a metal wall mounting bracket that allows you to secure it to the wall. However, because of its enormous size, you can easily tilt it. That’s usually my approach, but it’s worth mentioning that a potential risk is involved, so it might be advisable to use the bracket.
Value
Now that we have the power and price information, let’s quickly calculate the value. The value calculation shows that you are spending $5 for each watt of therapeutic red light.
I used the shopping tool and filtered by value to access and analyze this calculation. The panel is second on the list out of 62 panels, making it an exceptional value. It is ahead of the first-generation Rojo panel in third place and far ahead of the low-cost small Hooga panel in fourth place. The first-place panel is an Alibaba panel, which I don’t think is available anymore.
I will do a comparison video comparing the Rojo 3600, the Rouge G3 Ultimate, the Block Blue Light Mega, and my BioMax Quad setup to see which is the best full-body red light therapy panel.
My Pros
- Light coverage: I had a peak reading of 80 milliwatts when testing the light coverage across the panel. The average, after taking nine different readings, was 72mw. This means that you’re getting a nice blend of light across the panel. It also means you will not get hot spots or random spots where there’s a lot of light and other spots where there isn’t.
- Sound: The sound of this thing is impressively quiet, measuring only 43.5 decibels. To give you some perspective, the Rouge Ultimate G3, which is a similar size, measured at 56 decibels. In fact, this panel is one of the quietest I’ve tested, regardless of size. It’s pretty impressive, considering its size.
- Custom modes/Smart Modes: Custom modes allow the user to choose the specific wavelengths and intensity of each wavelength. You can save your custom mode as a preset.
You can adjust the intensity on some of the panels from Block Blue Light, MitoRed Light, and Platinum LED. However, the intensity change is grouped. You adjust all NIR or all red, unlike the Rojo Refine panels that allow each individual wavelength to be adjusted.
Another bonus is the preset smart modes. When you select a mode, it changes the emitted wavelengths, intensity, and time duration. You can access these settings directly through the panel or the app.
I think it is cool that you can pick a mode, for example, bone health, and the panel does the calculations for you. Now, of course, there are a lot of potential issues with this, and I’ll address that in the cons section.
- The dual-chipped panel has five wavelengths, including 810, and disperses the power evenly. These wavelengths have a lot of credibility behind them.
- The near-infrared pulses.
- These new premium red light therapy panels must have a touchscreen, this does. The app is not a must-have, but it’s nice to have. With the app, you can easily change smart and custom modes on your phone.
- The free international shipping is another huge plus.
- The power output of this panel is decent, although not as high as some Platinum LED panels. However, it is still a powerful panel compared to panels from two or three years ago. In the past, people would have considered this panel as a market-leading choice. I believe that anything above 50 or 60 milliwatts is sufficient, especially for full-body treatment. There may be situations where you need more power for a specific area, such as a joint.
There are two things I really like:
- 1) The size is massive. It’s a single panel that covers one whole side of my body. I can stand in front of it with full shoulder-to-shoulder and head-to-toe coverage. I can spend five to ten minutes on one side, then turn around and spend another five to ten minutes on the other side. That’s all I need to do.
I use a BioMax quad setup, which has the downside of having a big beam in the middle that doesn’t provide much light coverage. The Rojo 3600 solves this problem and is just much more manageable: one panel, one box, one cord, and one control screen. - 2) The price and value are extraordinary. This panel ships for $3300, compared to the Rouge Ultimate, which costs $5000. MitoRed has a few body panels between $5000 and $7000, and the quad BioMax setup is $4000. Factor in power output and price, and this panel has one of the best metrics of all the panels I have ever tested.
My Cons
- Touchscreen: It's too small and requires precise button pressing and scrolling, especially in the pulsing setting. I don’t like it. The control screen is too small for the number of settings you can access. Even the Platinum LED BioMax control screen is larger and requires fewer tasks. It would be better if it were an inch or two bigger. However, you can do everything through the app, which is easier.
- Accuracy of smart modes: Are the bone health and muscle recovery modes genuinely beneficial? Many people ask me how they should use their panel for specific ailments/goals, and I am not sure. Based on the research we have been doing, I am getting a rough idea.
It is worth questioning the accuracy and the amount of research invested in these modes. It is also important to note that the scientific community has not agreed on the best dosing methods. This makes me wonder whether these modes are merely marketing strategies or whether substantial evidence supports them.
Though marketed to simplify red light therapy, the smart modes can cause some confusion. For instance, imagine you sprained your ankle and got sunburned. When you come home, you may wonder which mode to use - skincare, joint, or muscle recovery. Should you use all of them? Maybe it’s better to keep it simple and do five minutes on each side without overcomplicating things.
I wish the smart modes displayed on the screen, or app showed a clear breakdown of what is happening. It would be helpful to see the intensity, wavelengths, and time instead of looking in the manual.
- No remote: remote. Having a remote can be convenient, even if it’s just for a simple on/off function.
- Size: It is very heavy and bulky, and if you live in an apartment or villa or up a few flights of stairs, it will be challenging to move. You will also need two people. If you move, it is again challenging to take with you. This panel is massive, and once in place, it’s a beautiful panel to have.
- Wavelengths: It has five wavelengths but lacks unique wavelengths such as blue light, amber, and 1060. However, I don’t think that’s necessarily a deal breaker.
- Amperage: The Rojo 3600 is a powerful device. It has a high amperage rating, especially for countries with 110 volts. In countries with 220 volts, this is not a problem. However, if you’re in a country like America with a 110-volt system, the Rojo 3600 draws 17.6 amps.
The standard rating for power points is usually 15 amps. If a device has a rating above 15 amps, it won’t work, or it will trip a circuit. New houses typically include some 20 amp plugs for appliances like ovens, but most plugs have a rating of 15 amps.
There is a possibility that you may purchase a large panel that does not work. I contacted the owner of Rojo Therapy to inquire about this, and he confirmed the specifications are correct. However, they have received no reports of customers in America who have bought these panels and discovered that they do not work when plugged into a regular power outlet.
Conclusion
Is this the ultimate red light therapy panel? Honestly, it’s incredibly close to being perfect. The price is fantastic, and it has decent power, unique and innovative features, free shipping, and a good warranty. It’s hard to find a reason not to like it, although the absence of blue light, amber light, and 1060 is noticeable.
I would be happy if this were the only panel I could use for the next several years. But before you rush out and purchase, I always recommend shopping around.
Other Considerations
Let's do a quick comparison. Check out my other videos using the Light Therapy Insider’s shopping tool guide for more in-depth information.
Rouge G3 Ultimate is similar in size and has 1200 LEDs (code ALEX saves). This panel actually puts out more power than the Refine 3600, but it only has two wavelengths, 660 and 850. It’s a lot more expensive and doesn’t have free shipping.
MitoRed Light’s commercial line, the Pro RLT, is another option (code ALEX saves here). With these heavy-duty panels, you’re getting quite a range of wavelengths. Some of these panels include the amber wavelength, which enhances their overall attractiveness. However, remember that you will spend significantly more money on this, so it’s something to consider.
Another option is to get four Biomax 900s and clip them all together. You’ll get seven wavelengths, more power than the Refine 3600, an excellent control system, an app, a remote control, and many stand options. However, you’ll have to run multiple cables and have that blank cross through the center of the panel. Plus, it will still cost more than the Rojo 3600.
