People often ask me which panel is better: the PlatinumLED Biomax 900 8th generation or the Block Blue Light Mega 4.0. Both panels have impressive features, making it difficult to choose between them.

To aid in decision-making, let’s thoroughly compare features, company history, shipping, and more. An alternative panel is also worth considering.

Company Backgrounds

PlatinumLED is a well-established name in the red light therapy market, boasting nearly a decade of experience. They initially operated in the grow light business, which equipped them with extensive knowledge of LEDs, panels, logistics, and support.

Block Blue Light has been in operation for approximately eight years. Initially, they concentrated on products that reduce blue light exposure, such as blue light-blocking glasses. Eventually, they expanded into the lighting field and ventured into red light therapy. Their Mega 4.0 panel is their fourth-generation product, indicating their significant experience in the field.

You might have seen my 2024 red light therapy comparison series, in which I tested 17 panels across various metrics. Platinum LED’s Biomax 900 won, with Block Blue Light’s Mega 4.0 coming in second.

If the BioMax 900 was the winner, why discuss this further? While the BioMax 900 had a higher overall score, the video targeted the average American customer. There are unique features in both the Mega and BioMax panels that might appeal to different people.

Wavelengths

Biomax 900 uses seven wavelengths, including traditional 660nm and 850nm, and 630nm, 810nm, 830nm, 480nm blue light, and 1060nm near-infrared light.

This panel is unique because it adds 480nm blue light and 1060nm near-infrared light, although the energy allocation to these wavelengths is minimal (2% for blue and 4% for 1060nm).

Mega 4.0 features five wavelengths with a more even power distribution: 630nm, 660nm, 810nm, 830nm, and 850nm. Each receives a significant portion of the panel’s energy, resulting in a well-blended light output, even at close distances.

Power Output

The Biomax 900's average irradiance is 90 mW/cm², making it slightly more powerful. Coming in closely behind is the Mega 4.0, reaching 87 mW/cm². Despite that, the Mega 4.0 has a greater wattage output because of its slightly larger dimensions.

Light Coverage

The BioMax 900 utilizes single-chip LEDs, which may cause uneven light distribution at close range. However, this issue diminishes as distance from the panel increases.

The Mega 4.0 uses dual-chip LEDs for a well-distributed light spread, even up close. Dual-chip means each LED has two wavelengths.

EMF, Flicker, and Sound

Both panels perform well in terms of minimal EMF and flicker. However, the Mega 4.0 is quieter, producing 43 decibels of sound compared to the Biomax 900’s 49 decibels. Anything under 50 decibels is quiet.

Warranty and Support

PlatinumLED offers a 60-day return period, although there may be a 20% restocking fee. They provide phone support, which can be very convenient for some users.

Block Blue Light offers a 30-day return period without restocking fees unless the product is damaged. They also provide email and chat support.

Controls and Operation

Touchscreen control systems:

Both panels feature touchscreen control systems. PlatinumLED’s introduced this innovation a few years ago, setting a high standard with its sleek and intuitive interface. Block Blue Light’s new 4th Gen series also incorporates touchscreen controls.

While both systems work exceptionally well, the BioMax 900 is more innovative and user-friendly, perhaps because I am more familiar with it.

Remote:

Each panel includes a remote for simple operation. The BioMax remote is simple, with just an on-off button that powers the lights to full intensity for a 20-minute session.

The Block Blue Light Mega panel’s remote offers more options, though I primarily use remotes for essential on-off functions. I prefer using the panels’ control screens for advanced settings, which are both well-designed.

App:

A notable difference is that Biomax has an app that offers complete control over the panel, similar to the touchscreen. Block Blue Light doesn't have an app.

This feature proves helpful in commercial settings that require remote control. For instance, you can adjust intensity and settings from the reception desk or while lying in bed without reaching the panel.

PlatinumLED offers a professional remote for about $100, which functions similarly to the app and provides even more control options.

Pulsing

The PlatinumLED BioMax does not offer pulsing. However, the Block Blue Light Mega does. If you want pulse light and the ability to adjust its intensity, the Block Blue Light panel is likely the better choice.

Stands

Five different stands are available for the BioMax 900: a horizontal, a vertical, a wall mount, a floor, and a motorized horizontal stand. I highly recommend the motorized stand if you have the budget and space.

Block Blue Light only offers three stands, and they do not have a motorized option.

The Block Blue Light Mega 4.0 offers a more balanced light spread thanks to its dual-chip LEDs, which ensure an even distribution of light at a close distance.

The even power distribution across its five wavelengths ensures effective therapy, and including pulsing light options can enhance the therapeutic effects.

This panel operates more quietly, making it a better choice for those sensitive to sound during therapy sessions.

Despite the Mega 4.0’s shorter return period and lack of advanced app control, its affordable international shipping makes it accessible to a broader range of people.

Although the lack of accessory options may be a downside for some, the panel’s core features will meet the needs of many users.
