But does it work, or is it just another fad? Let’s break it down - here's my Mito Red MitoMIND review:

MitoMIND Helmet

At first glance, the MitoMind resembles an oversized bicycle helmet. It’s made of plastic and houses 256 LEDs inside. The LEDs primarily emit 810nm near-infrared light, a wavelength known for its ability to penetrate deep into tissues, including the brain.

The device has a wired controller unit that connects to the helmet and plugs into a power source. While the setup is straightforward, the real question is: How effective is it?

One unique design feature includes visible red LEDs to indicate when the device is powered on. However, the therapeutic effects come from the invisible 810nm NIR spectrum, which the naked eye cannot see.

While the presets are convenient, some may wonder why specific settings reduce power output, especially given the concerns about the device’s overall power levels.

Mito Red Light includes a basic instruction manual but lacks in-depth guidance on optimizing settings for specific cognitive concerns. More comprehensive documentation—or even expert recommendations—would benefit users new to brain photobiomodulation.

Additionally, Mito offers an optional intranasal accessory for an extra $200. This add-on delivers 1070nm light via the nasal passage, targeting deeper brain structures. Given the research supporting intranasal photobiomodulation, this could be a worthwhile upgrade.

Wavelength and Power

I tested the device using a spectrometer to verify the accuracy of its 810nm wavelength and power output.

  • Wavelength: The device peaked at 810nm, consistent with manufacturer claims.
  • Power Output: Measured between 7-10 mW/cm², slightly lower than the advertised 14 mW/cm².

For context, direct sunlight can deliver similar levels of near-infrared exposure (~11 mW/cm²). This raises an important question: Why pay for a device when natural light provides comparable power levels? The answer lies in pulsing technology, but its real-world benefits remain debatable.

The MitoMIND Helmet is priced at $2,195, but with my discount code, it can be purchased for around $2,100.

  • Lower-than-advertised power output – The measured intensity was 7-10 mW/cm², significantly below the claimed 14 mW/cm².
  • Bulky and cumbersome design – The helmet feels large and awkward, making long sessions uncomfortable.
  • Thick, tangled cables – The wired setup is clunky, limiting movement during use.
  • Outdated controller – The basic interface lacks a modern, user-friendly experience.

If you're exploring brain photobiomodulation, here are two major competitors:

Would I Use This Helmet?

I wouldn’t use the MitoMIND Helmet. It’s bulky, underpowered, and lacks modern features compared to competitors.

For serious brain photobiomodulation, Vielight or Neuradiant seem like better options.

However, if you want a more affordable, entry-level device and don’t mind the lower power output, MitoMIND could be worth considering—especially if paired with the intranasal add-on.
