Let's examine the Block Blue Light Elite XL red light therapy panel. This device is the latest offering from Block Blue Light (code ALEX saves), a company known for producing high-quality, reliable products in the wellness space.

It's a rather large panel, but is it too small for a body panel? Is it the right panel for you? Let's go ahead and break it down for you so you can decide:

Features of the Elite XL

The Elite XL is a panel measuring 62 inches tall by 16.5 inches wide (156 cm x 42 cm) and weighing 55 lbs (25 kg). Although it doesn't cover the entire body from head to toe, it provides extensive coverage, making it suitable for users who want to focus on their core areas.

This panel contains 720 dual-chip LEDs. It emits 50% red light and 50% near-infrared light.

It includes key features like dimming and pulsing. The touchscreen is highly responsive and user-friendly, and the control screen is top-notch. It has all the necessary accessories, such as a remote, wall-hanging bracket, and door-hanging hooks. There are also options for additional stands. The manual is informative and well-written.

Wavelengths:

Block Blue Light claims that the Elite XL uses five specific wavelengths: 630nm, 660nm, 810nm, 83nm, and 850nm, with an even 50/50 split between red and near-infrared light. Block Blue Light tested these wavelengths using a solar meter and a spectrometer. It's great that they are also using the more accurate spectrometer tool.

Let's fire up my spectrometer!

  • Red Light Peaks: The spectrometer detected peaks at 633nm and 665nm, closely aligning with the stated 630nm and 660nm wavelengths.
  • Near-Infrared Peaks: We observed peaks at 811nm, 837nm, and 860nm, slightly higher than the listed wavelengths but within an acceptable range. I provide companies with a 5 NM margin of error, and while some may slightly surpass it, the discrepancy isn't severe.

Power/Irradiance:

While Block Blue Light (again code ALEX saves!) advertises a power density of 90 mW/cm² at a distance of 6 inches, my testing revealed:

  • Peak Power Density: 99 mW/cm² at 6 inches, exceeding the manufacturer's claims. However, this is just a snapshot of one area; as I moved the spectrometer around, readings in other areas were lower. An average reading is essential.
  • Average Power Density: Its average power density is 77 mW/cm² across nine different panel areas, placing it among the top performers in its category.

If we look at total power, The Block Blue Light Elite panel ranks third, with a power of 415 watts. This is lower than the other two panels. The reason for this is that the Elite panel has fewer LEDs compared to the larger panels.

Sound:

Despite the panel's size, the sound reading was only 43.2 decibels, which is relatively low.

Stands:

The panel includes a wall-mounted bracket, like the one I used with my BioMax 900 panels and door-mounting hooks.

You have two options if you want bigger, heavier, and sturdier stands. First, a manual stand allows you to use the panel in either a vertical or horizontal setup. This option costs about $500.

Second, there is a motorized stand that is worth the investment. This stand is approximately $900.

Pros of the Elite XL

• Power and Coverage: The Elite XL delivers significant power, with peak readings reaching 99 mW/cm² at 6 inches distance and an average of 77 mW/cm² across the panel. This places it near the top of the panels that I have reviewed.

  • User-Friendly Design: The touchscreen interface is a pleasure to use—intuitive and responsive. The power cord plugin is nice and low on the bottom of this panel.
  • Multiple Wavelengths: The panel's use of five different wavelengths and dual-chip LEDS ensures a great blend of light coverage.
  • Features: The dimming and pulsing options enhance the panel's versatility, even if you don't use them often.
  • Portability and Setup: Despite its size, the Elite XL is manageable for one person to move and set up. Thanks to its relatively lighter weight than other large panels, one can easily hang the Elite XL from a wall or door.
  • Warranty and Customer Support: The Elite XL offers peace of mind with a 5-year warranty and a 30-day return period. Their outstanding customer service and long-standing presence in the bio-hacking space heighten Block Blue Light's appeal.
  • Shipping options for international customers: If you live outside the USA, shipping is only $15
  • Power requirements: This panel draws 11 amps and is compatible with any standard 110-volt power plug in America. Other larger panels require special-rated power plugs as they draw more amps, like 17 or even 20 amps.

Some people have successfully run larger panels off regular American outlets, but there is a risk of the circuit tripping or not working. The Block Blue Light Elite does not have this issue, making it a big selling point.

Cons of the Elite XL

No product is perfect, and the Elite XL has some drawbacks:

  • Size Limitations: While the Elite XL covers most of your body, it's not quite a full-body panel. It's short and too narrow to give me head-to-toe and shoulder-to-shoulder coverage. Users might find it misses areas like the head, feet, or arms unless they reposition themselves or the panel during sessions.
  • Lack of App Control: The Elite XL does not offer app-based control like some competitors.While not a deal-breaker, app functionality can be convenient for managing sessions and settings, especially for those who appreciate tech integration.
  • The Elite XL is priced at $3,499 (before discounts). While competitively priced in dollars per watt, some might question whether they should invest more in a larger panel with more LEDs, like the Rojo 3600.
  • The Elite XL offers excellent value, providing a watt of light for around $7.20. I considered anything under $10 to be great just a year or two ago.
  • Limited Unique Wavelengths: The panel sticks to the core wavelengths without adding extras like blue or amber light. Some users might consider the absence of these wavelengths a missed opportunity. Some may feel that 17% allocated to 810 isn't sufficient, but it's acceptable.

Conclusion

The Block Blue Light Elite XL is a solid, powerful panel that ticks most boxes for anyone serious about red light therapy. Its blend of features, user-friendly design, and robust build make it an excellent choice for new and experienced users.

This product's wavelengths have been scientifically proven to be effective and beneficial. It is priced reasonably and offers good value. You are purchasing from a reputable company.

However, if you're looking for full-body coverage or advanced app control, consider other options or wait for Block Blue Light's upcoming larger full-body model.

Other Considerations

If you're willing to spend a few hundred dollars more, consider the Rojo 3600. It's slightly less powerful but is a much larger panel with 1,200 LEDs

It also has built-in smart modes and an app, making it an attractive option.

Another option is the Rouge Ultimate G3 panel. However, it currently emits only two wavelengths, which might make it less appealing if you want a broader range of wavelengths.

MitoRed Light offers its Pro RLT Line, which includes several panels worth considering, especially if you're buying for commercial use.

These panels are more expensive because they are intended for clinical settings or situations where the device will be used frequently throughout the day.

If you're on a budget, you can start with a smaller panel like the Block Blue Light Mega or the PlatinumLED BioMax 900. Over time, you can add more panels to build up to a full-body setup.
